[Dr Samuel Young of Guilliehill and Broomrigg (1701 - 1782)]

Oil on canvas by an unknown artist. The Young family acquired the estate of Guilliehill and Broomrigg in 1612 but their links with Dumfries date back to the 14th century. For much of his career Samuel Young was a doctor with the British Army in Antigua, but in 1753 he returned to Dumfries to continue his medical practice. He married Sarah Wyne who he knew from Antigua.
